Passing is the story of Clare Ken dry, a light-skinned black woman, who chooses to pass as white to reap the social and economic benefits of the privileged class. Clare is married to a racist and is oblivious to his racist beliefs. Clare is not entirely happy with her decision. She is attracted to Irene Redfield, an African American woman who has chosen to remain black and in the African American community. Clare has severed all of her ties to her family and her past because of her choice to pass.
