It is 1946, and May Driscoll has been working as a maid for her Missouri family for years. It is the only life she has ever known, but she is on the brink of achieving the independent life she’s dreamed of since childhood. Then everything changes. Fifteen-year-old May, who is white, has grown up around the black servants who work for her family. She unthinkingly accepts the casual racism of her relatives and neighbors, but when her best friend, the daughter of her family’s maid, is killed by a white boy in a hit-and-run accident, May is confronted for the first time by the cruelty around her.
