The Handmaid's Tale is one of the most significant novels of the twentieth century and an acknowledged modern classic. With unflinching honesty, Margaret Atwood examines a world destroyed by religious fanaticism and environmental disaster. Offred, an "unwoman", is a prisoner, a concubine, a slave. She may choose to seduce the Commander to secure her position. She may not. She may be caught up in the rituals of the regime, or may simply exist within the walls of the remote Commander's home, remembering her life before, taking care of her Serena Joy, the Commander's wife. She tells her story in fragments, in private thoughts and memories, in diary entries and flashbacks. And she tells it from the heart.
