Lincoln Rhyme, the former head of the NYPD’s Crime Scene Unit and one of the most brilliant investigators in the world, is paralyzed from the neck down in an accident that occurred during an investigation. Determined to do whatever he can to help catch criminals, he turns his considerable intellect to reading and interpreting evidence and solving crimes from his wheelchair. Amelia Sachs is a top policewoman and with Rhyme makes up the X-Files division at the NYPD. Her job is to call on Rhyme and his team for any case that seems beyond explanation. When a series of crimes occurs in New York City that defy explanation, the police turn to Rhyme and Sachs. A shadowy criminal who has broken into multiple apartments locks the residents in their bathrooms, then arranges the furniture. He then calls the police and tells them he will kill a hostage an hour until they release a notorious criminal who is serving a life sentence. As the hours tick down, Rhyme and Sachs are thrust into a desperate situation in which even the smallest mistake could cost a life and the only way to identify the killer is to break every lock in New York.
